Portable and outdoor operation offers Amateur Radio enthusiasts a multitude of activities and interests. It compliments other interests such as: hiking, camping, 4WDing, mountaineering, as well as escaping the radio interference that plagues so many living in suburban environments.
Portable operation is far more accessible these days with the availability of some fantastic battery powered radios. The venerable Yaesu FT-817, now almost 25 years old is still a favourite. Perhaps the most modern and popular all-rounder these days is the Icom IC-705. Small CW and data only radios are readily available off-the-shelf or as kits, allowing many to integrate construction and experimentation into their amateur radio activities.

Portable operation also provides the opportunity to work some wonderful DX on the HF bands; many operate from the beach, easily making contact with Europe, North America and other far-flung stations with minimal power. Saltwater provides great opportunities for long distance propagation. These smaller, low power radios are also much cheaper.
